Jim Nicholson in Denver

  • by: Colorado Pols

It’s no secret that some Colorado Republicans aren’t settled on Bob Schaffer as their man for the U.S. Senate, but could a former floated name be rising back to the top?

Colorado Pols first reported in January that Jim Nicholson, Secretary of Veteran Affairs, was contemplating a run for the U.S. Senate. Nicholson later announced that he was not interested in running after all.

Nicholson will be in Denver on June 29 for a big ticket fundraiser for the Denver County Republicans (a private reception is $500).

Of course, there could be nothing else to this other than Nicholson agreeing to raise money for the local GOP (he is a longtime Colorado resident), and an organizer of the GOP event says that Nicholson is not running for Senate.
But then again, this could be a good time for Nicholson to start making the rounds in Colorado in advance of a potential candidacy. It’s not like there isn’t an opportunity for him.

  1. As a participant in the process, I always get nervous when the Party dictates who the candidates will be, without our getting a word in edgewise.

Schaffer appeals to me because he was honest when it counted, even if, upon a blow-by-blow analysis, I might end up liking the other guy.  Problem is, the candidates coming out of the Party these days are interchangeable parts.

  2. Typical R:

Nicholson stalled program to aid wounded vets.

“A proposal to keep seriously wounded vets from falling through the cracks of the bureaucracy was shelved in 2005 when Jim Nicholson took over as the secretary of the Veterans Affairs Department,” ABC News reports. “As a result, seriously wounded veterans continued to face long delays for health care and benefit payments after being discharged from the military, says former VA program manager Paul Sullivan. … Sullivan said he was told the cost of the system — less than $1 million to build and requiring a handful of staff to maintain — was prohibitive.”

  3. There is absolutely no reason to be floating the rumor Nicholson is/might be running for Senate.  He’s doing a fundraiser. End of story.  Stop with the blatent rumor-milling and get back to the basics of reporting and discussing.

    1. I heard that Nicholson substitutes for Al White in the Legislature when Al needs some time off. As they are identical twins, separated at birth, no one has ever noticed the difference – until now….

    2. From what I’ve heard, Party insiders are smarting from the Schaffer-Coors fiasco in ’04 and the Beauprez-Holtzman debacle of ’06, and the last thing they want is a bruising primary.

  4. Yeah, I heard Nicholson was going to formally endorse Josh Penry during the event. Josh’s base of support is so strong in the City and County of Denver, he thought having Nicholson give his endorsement at that event would be the perfect way to kick off his campaign. Everyone is talking about it.

  5. Jim would be a great US Senator, but he’s not asking for that job.  He’s made a commitment to the president, 24.5 million veterans and all of us taxpayers that fund VA’s $76B budget.  His trip to Denver is a non-VA event and a favor to Denver Republicans who are working hard to re-build the county to help all our candidates.

It’s not a “big ticket” affair – unless the $75 you spend to get your hair done or spend out on Saturday night is “big ticket.”

Yes, a few folks are paying more – because they want to help.

You can, too!  Register at http://www.denvergop.org.  Friday, June 29, 6:30 p.m. Bishop Machebeuf H.S. (Sounds funky, but it’s a great venue!)

It will be a great party – gourmet catered buffet, open bar and live music with the inside scoop on national affairs by a man who lives it. http://www.denvergop.org

Jim is currently Secretary of Veterans Affairs, CEO of second-largest department of government. Served as U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, Colonel (Ret) US Army, Ranger, paratrooper, homebuilder, attorney – some highlights. Traveled the world.  Other concerns: an advocate for religious freedom, finding the cure for HIV-AIDS, stopping international human trafficking; promoting genomic medicine and bio-genetic food farming; controlling international terrorism.
